Some Rights Reserved

It is not always a pleasant subject of conversation, but sooner or later, a discussion of copyright is inevitable for anyone who puts any material on the web. It is probably a good idea for people who simply blag about the world around them or keep a public diary, but for anyone who publishes traditional creative output, it is essential. So let's have the talk.

I assert copyright to all material on the site

It doesn't make me particularly happy to do so, and I don't like making the claim that the work here has real value above and beyond its value as a hobby of mine, but the fact remains: I created the work on this site, and I assert all rights to it. It is simply mine.

But I am licensing most of it under a CC

But, copyright law is a little nutty. It is possible that in the strictest sense, if I reserved all rights to myself, even loading it would put you in violation, because reading it necessarily makes a copy. This situation is the result of the organic growth of copyright law for the last several hundred years, plus the concerted efforts of big rightsholders to restrict free use of their products for the last thirty or so. Lawrence Lessig has writen a book on it, if you're interested. (Free Culture)

I want you to be able to read it, but I don't want to give away all of my rights, so I have selected a license from creative commons that covers the work on this site. Anywhere I post it, you have the right to copy, distribute, and perform my work, subject to the following conditions: you must attribute the work to me [My name, a line indicating authorship, and a link to this page should be sufficient]; you may not modify it; you may not use it for commercial purposes; and of course, you must make it available to your audience under the same conditions.

By Attribution because I want someone who likes my work to be able to find me and the rest of the work I have chosen to publish.

No commercial use because I want to have some control over what work of mine people are actually paying for.

No modification because I don't consider any of these finalized works. They're all sort of drafts, and I want to be able to change them around without any baggage.

Of course, if you want to do something else...

If you have a project that you feel would really benefit by the inclusion of one of my works or by its modification, please just let me know (by email? any god-damned thing you can think of at this domain should get to me sooner or later). The rights reserved to me above can always be waived if I like where you're going.
